Discovering Croissants
I served in the U.S. Army in Germany for my two-year tour of duty after receiving my Officer’s Commission as an ROTC graduate of Cornell University. I decided to stay and Europe after my service, and was lucky enough to find a great job, and I lived in various European communities for the next 6 years. One of the great pleasures of living in France was having a breakfast of coffee and croissant. This wonderful crescent-shaped pastry is made with puff pastry-like dough, and should include a lot of butter! Finding the Best
I discovered that many donut shops carry croissants because the dough can be purchased frozen and easily baked. I’ve tried the croissant at the St. Tropez in Encinitas, at the French pastry shop on Carlsbad Village Drive, and at various donut shops in the area. You can even find them in the bakery section of most grocery stores. But the best I’ve found are at the Donut Shop at the corner of Roosevelt and Grand in the Carlsbad Village. Every once in a while, I add a Plain Old Fashioned to the order when my blood sugar is low. And it’s delicious too. I envy the people that can eat their glazed donuts because they look luscious!

That is Super Donut # 1 on Roosevelt and Grand. Super Donut # 2 is my personal favorite and it is located in Encinitas on El Camino Real in the Staples/ Golf Galaxy center. The BEST! Sarah knows every customer and what they want when they come in. She runs Encinitas and her husband runs # 1. I think she told me they had been in Carlsbad for 25 years and Encinitas for 20!!
