Victor Borge on KPBS

There was a special on PBS tonight about Victor Borge and his life. Much of it was in Danish, and covered his life from his youth in Dane as a young Jewish performer, and his immigration to the U.S. ahead of the German invasion of Denmark.

How I Met Victor Borge

Although not mentioned in the program, he lived for some time in Great Neck, NY, where I grew up. When I was in my teens, I worked for Western Union delivering telegrams on my bycycle. I don’t remember exactly how old I was. I remember it was a Sunday, and I had to deliver a telegram to Victor Borge. My recollection is that he lived in Kings Point somewhere, and I bycyclied out there to deliver it. I also remember that it was he who came to the door, and tipped me a dollar!
